Session 12 - STARSHINE MOONGLOW, The Battle Axe That Broke The Backs of the Demon King's First Legion at the Battle of Arrtain (take damage for reading this)

4, 2017: "Never Trust A Giant Gnome Statue"

We continue through Wave Echo Cave and fight some bugbears twice, plus a drow and giant spiders
CURRENT:
Day 36; 175 days left; mid-day (Tarsakh 4, Year 498 AF)
The battle is over and we are in the Gnome statue
room. There is a table in the room and
it is covered with papers. The notes are
all in the same language and we find two pages that are very important. One page is a map and the other is a note. The map page is matching the one that we have.
It looks like the person was trying to locate the forge room but he was
not having any luck. The note names a
group of people called the Green Feathers.
Thefar Stronghammer is the god of mining and it a
neutral god. The statue is seated. Alton takes time to climb the statue and pry
out of the emerald eyes. Veshna moves
toward the exit just in case. As Alton pries out the eye the ceiling collapses and the pillar cracks. We all have to make a DEX save. I manage to make it out but take some serious
damage. DuTamn, Sickback, Veshna, Firebeard all
managed to survive.
Alton and Aggadah are out. Aggadah is buried under the stone but Alton is out. It take a few turns to dig Aggadah out but we
manage to get him out in time. DuTamn is able to lay on hands to stabilize him.
I use 2nd level healing spell on Alton and a kit on Aggadah. I also use another kit on Firebeard. Alton goes back and is able to determine that
the other eye is a fake gem.
As we exit the room there is a door at the end of the
hall. This room is off the map but there
is a room. We all need to rest and we
think that this is the best option for this.
The door is locked and Alton comes to rescue. There is an anvil sigil on the door
plate. I hand out the key and Alton is
not able to see any traps.
When he opens the door the first thing that we notice is
a dead gnome, one of the brothers, that is dead in the room. This is one of the brothers that we found at
the cave entrance. The gnome looks like
he was tortured and died in torture.
The room is dark and looks like a bedroom. The bed is the only thing in this room. The body is just body and not any items. We are able to see that this door locks. We decide that this is the place to rest.
Day 37; 174 days left; morning (Tarsakh 5, Year 498 AF)
We wake up and move to the end of the cavern. There is a rope climbed and attacked to the
wall. Alton and Aggadah are the first
ones to down. They are in the pit when
something happens. The water flows over
the edge and to the bottom. When Alton and Aggadah are in the hole they roll initiative.
Three ghost like things move toward the two. They are medium ghosts but we can not see
them well. They appear to be humanoid in
shape
- Alton; He shoots but the arrow flies right through
- Aggadah; casts chill touch and misses
- evil; attacks with swipe but misses Alton
- i cast sacred flame and him for minor damage
- Alton; moves and shoots in the back but arrow flies
right through toward Aggadah but arrow misses
- Firebeard; throws a hand axe and misses but he is able to
make it down the rope
- Aggadah; casts dissonant whispers and actually deals
damage
- evil; swipes at Aggadah for major necrotic damage but he
makes his save.
- evil; attacks Firebeard and hits with swipe necrotic damage
and he fails
- evil; attacks Alton but he misses
- Veshna; produce flame but misses
- DuTamn; eldritch blast but messes
- Slickback; strikes and hits
- i cast Bless on Aggadah, Alton, and Firebeard hoping to keep
them alive with the saving throw
- Alton; misses with arrow
- Firebeard; he hits the ghost and it screams when he deals
damage
- Aggadah; casts witchbolt and manages to hit
- evil; hits Aggadah and manages to drop him by lowering
his hit point max
- Veshna; flame and hits manages to destroy
- DuTamn; blasts for minor damage
- Slickback; strikes with flanking and deals damage
- i cast sacred flame and severely damage
- Alton; drops bow and draws short sword with an
advantage strike.
Strikes and deals enough damage to hurt but not destroy
- Firebeard; strikes and destroys
The entire area is now clear of ghosts and the party is
seriously hurt.
We determine that these appear to be spectral in
nature. There are several holes down
here but nothing substantial. It looks
like there are other items but nothing remaining. We take time to search the area but there is
no other way out. It does not look like
they succeeded in what they were looking for.
When we spoke with Fluffanutta he said that he was
looking for his forge which is like a metal pensive several feet wide. It is possible to climb the other wall.
We take time to dig, 1 hour per perception check. Alton is
able to find the long dead body of a gnome.
He is able to remove the body but he finds a small pouch on the body and gauntlets.

- Alton touches the red side and it tingles like a battery.
He drops it on the ground. We are able to see that the white side is
like a large jaguar cat while the red side is a squirrel with wings.
When he tries to touch both sides it is too intense for
him to handle
- Aggadah tries to pick up white side and takes 2 points damage
- The way
to release the creature is for good to touch white and evil to touch red.
Slickback grabs the red side and holds the symbol to me and i touch the white wide. When we touch a white puma (Marzipan) and red flying square (Reynard) come out. They can talk and we learn that this is the form that they take when they take massive damage. They tells us that the gauntlets are strength based. Kevin tries on the gauntlets and he is stronger. I offer to take Marzipan with us. We manage to get back out of the ravine.
We go back to digging and we try for another hour but we
do not find anything important. The puma
tells us that there is another way and that there used to be a water wheel. The puma is able to point us in he direction
of the water room. The best way to move
is to climb up the other side wall and move on.
Firebeard and Alton go up first and they are able to secure
the rope. We all go up together and make
it to the other side. Once on the other
side we travel down the channel and it is 10 feet but there is no water in it
anymore. Alton is in the lead with his
torch and we move forward. There is a
water wheel in the middle of the channel and it has been frozen with lack of
use. Alton scouts ahead while we take
time to climb up the wheel. We can see
that there is a light above the wheel.
Firebeard climbs the wheel and manages to get to the
top. We send Marzipan to get Alton. At the top of the wheel he sees several
zombies and a skull floating in the air that is shedding the light that we
see. The skull is covered in green fire
and is floating in the air. When Firebeard climbs up he is noticed by the green flaming skull
- evil; fires rays out of his green eyes and misses twice
then flies up in the air
- Firebeard; strikes zombie and deals damage
- Slickback; hits zombie
- DuTamn; attacks and hits zombie
- Aggadah; casts jump and jumps up on the ledge
- I take the other side of the wheel and take up the
other side
- evil; flame eyes at Firebeard
- Alton; he fires and deals damage
- Firebeard; strikes for minor damage and manages to push him
over
- Slickback; strikes and drops zombie
- DuTamn; strikes but minor damage
- Alton; strikes with critical and some serious damage
- Aggadah; casts thunderwave and drops one of the zombies
- i cast shatter and manage to injure two and drop one
- evil; casts fireball and targets Slickback, Veshna, Alton, DuTamn and Firebeard for some serious damage.
19 for the failure and only 10 for pass.
- Firebeard; heals with 2nd wind and strikes zombie and drops
him. He is not able to push the other
zombie
- evil; strikes at me and hits but my thunderous rebuke
drops two of them and seriously damages one.
- Alton; fires and kills the other zombie near me
- Aggadah; leaps with jump spell and tries to strike but
misses
- i try to strike with Guiding bolt but miss
- Firebeard; fails with the attack and fails with the strike
- Alton; strikes and manages to hit the creature
- I cast shatter and I am able to deal serious damage
- evil; takes a move and avoids the attack of opp to get
away
- Veshna; sling and hits
- Firebeard; hits with an axe for minor damage
- Slickback; no actions available
- DuTamn; wonders where he is and how he got there but
can't strike as he forgets eldritch blast.
He cast protection from evil
- Alton; strikes and hits for minor damage
- Aggadah; casts Shatter but only manages to deal minor
damage
- evil; fires magic missile on Aggadah and manages to drop
him for the second time. The skull moves
back to hover over the body.
- Veshna; fires
and hits
- Firebeard; minor slashing damage and manages to destroy the
creature with the wrong axe. At the end of the battle Aggadah is down but he is
on top of the building and he is able to pass his death save. Alton is able to run across the turbine and
lower Aggadah down to Firebeard. We take time
to search the room and we do not find anything.
There is nothing on the zombies.
We take time to heal and put the pieces together. We are all taking time for a short rest.
As we move on we get to a large cavern with glittering
minerals. The impression is a starry
night sky. There are many skeletons that
have been crushed. There are two
buildings that are sized for human creatures.
There appears to have been a fire damage in these buildings. There is a north passage that leads to the lake
and a passage to the south to the mushroom cavern. There is a column in the center of the lower
part of the room.
Alton takes the lead and moves to the set of doors that
are part of the first building. The
appear to be masonry battered and blackened with fire damage. There are skeletons and markings on the floor
and walls that appear to be fire damage.
He approaches and is able to open the door without any trouble. The doors open freely and we enter the room.
This is a large workshop that is badly damaged. In the middle of the room there is a small
brazier with a green flame. They appear
to be untouched. There is a spherical
creature that measures 4 feet in diameter with 4 eye stalks and a large
eye. We hear a voice that says,
"hello." There are also other
shelves in the room, it appears that there is a weapon on the nearby
table. Alton backs out of the room.
I ask Marzipan about the Beholder and he responds that
there is no beholder down here. Upon
hearing that I try to disbelieve the beholder as I trust Marzipan. When I try to disbelieve i fail and i believe
that it is real. I then tell Marzipan
that there is a beholder here and she should try to see it. Both Veshna and I have to make Con saves.
- I cast Bless on Slickback, Firebeard and DuTamn
- evil; Firebeard fails his Con save and takes 13 necrotic
damage. He is able to make his Wis save
so he is not able to feel afraid
- Veshna; he casts fairy fire but the spell rebounds and
flies at Veshna. Veshna is now bathed in
fairy fire
- Slickback; moves into the room and hits the creatures
- Firebeard, throws axe and minor damage
- DuTamn; moves then casts bless on me, Aggadah, and Alton
- Aggadah; moves then casts shocking grasp as a distance
spell
- Alton; first
- move past the door and cast spiritual weapon for minor
damage
- evil; casts on Firebeard and he is fears for 1 minute and
must move away from the creature
- evil; is able to confuse Slickback
- Veshna; he is able to crit the attack for massive damage
- Slickback; confused and attacks DuTamn for 14 points of
damage
- Firebeard; he moves full movement
- DuTamn; casts vines on Slickback but he is able to escape
- Aggadah; casts sleep but does nothing
- Alton; moves and fires at the beholder for a crit and
falls
The spell ends when the creature dies. Firebeard is able to move back to the rest of the
party. When he shamefully comes back to
the party after running. We discover
that this is not a beholder but it is a spectator. We realize that we are in the forge room as
Marzipan confirms this. This forge can
not be moved. We just have to keep this
area clear.
We take time to search the room and we find that there is
a mace on the table and a breast plate.
There are two tables in this room .
When we look at the mace it is a masterwork item that is
shaped like a sunburst made of solid brass.
There is also a breast plate with a gold dragon motif on the chest.
At this point Firebeard is able to put his axe in the
fire. When he puts his axe in the fire
he is frozen and a sound. The weapon
that Firebeard is wielding turns shiny and it becomes a little more blue. Another rune appears and our puma is able to
read the rune. It says,
"devil" and the rune is the same as before. When Firebeard is telling us he makes sure that
he tells us that the weapon. This
weapon was not spoken in full so we all take damage from the rest of the name.
DuTamn takes time to search the breast plate
There is another room off the the side. This room is completely destroyed and they
have suffered massive fire damage. There
is nothing anywhere in this room. We
move out of this room and back into the cavern.
We move down the stairs and move to the other room in this cavern. Alton moves down the escarpment and looks for
tracks or other signs.
The largest iron doors are melted and blasted. Alton is able to use his gauntlets and the
crowbar and he is able to pry the doors open. There are several blasted and charred items. This room was severely destroyed. There is a chest in this room but every other
thing in this room is destroyed. As Alton enters the room a ghost creature appears and tells us that our lives are
forfeit. This is a ghost of a human.

- DuTamn; moves into the room but does nothing else

- i cast spiritual weapon and hit for near max damage
- Slickback; flurry of blows and hits twice
- Veshna; moves to heal Alton
- Firebeard; strikes and hit because the new weapon power
helps
- DuTamn; fails and throws his weapon
- evil; strikes Firebeard but he makes his con save
- Aggadah; chill touch but misses
- Alton; he is back to alive and he is moving away
- i send the spiritual weapon for the killing blow The
check is unlocked and we open the chest and find the following items
- 1400 cp, 210 tn, 49 ep, 3 diamonds (100 gp), wooden
pipe with platinum filigree
We are three days from the town with Fluffanutta and
bringing him back to the forge. The plan
is to go back to town together and then bring Fluffanutta back with the most
direct route. We take a full rest and we
move out the rest of the day. On the road
back we ask about the Green Feathers but none of our companions are able to
tell us anything. When we travel back we
manage to leave the cave from the best route.
Day 39; 172 days left; mid-day (Tarsakh 7, Year 498 AF)
On the way back we come across two stone statues that
appear to be cast in fear. We believe
that there is a stone creature in the area that might have turned this creature
into stone. We come across the tracks of
a snake. When we track the creature we
see that the tracks lead to a clearing.
We take time to get to the clearing and we see that the medusa has been
slaughtered and cut apart. At the far end
of the clearing is a mechanical clockwork creature. When we enter the clearing the clockwork
creature charges at us.
- Veshna; he cast fairy fire and we now have advantage on
any of our attacks
- i cast shatter and deal max damage
- Firebeard; is able to use his shield to avoid the damage
- Slickback; crits with a flurry
- Aggadah; he casts shatter and managed to damage himself
- Alton; misses with a bow
- Firebeard; managed crit but minor damage
- Veshna; ball of
fire but only minor damage
- i cast guiding bolt on the creature
- evil; strikes at Firebeard with a bite and hits multiple time for serious
damage
- evil; slams the monk
and manages to hit for minor damage
- Slickback; he uses his ki points and damage the creature
- DuTamn; he casts thunderous smite but misses
- Aggadah; he casts shocking grasp and hits
- Alton; he shoots with the final kill shot and drops the
machine As the creature goes down several of the party need to make a Dex save
to avoid the exploding damage. Several of
the party members are severely hurt in the blast. There is nothing left for this creature.
We know that this is a clockwork abomination. We take time to search the area and we find
that there is a path that leads to a lair.

- 1 amethyst (100 gp each)

- 2 potions (superior healing 8d4+8)
Day 40; 181 days left; mid-day (Tarsakh 8, Year 498 AF)
We can take the two statues back with us and use our
pouch back to town. The plan is to bring
this gnome back to normal non-stone and then extort money form the other
one. We make it back to Fluffanutta and show him about the forge. We are
able to get back to the end of the path and make it back to the town.
We are able to identify the items and we discover that
the mace and the breastplate are +1 items.
We also get the Spider staff identified and it is called a "Spider
Staff"
The first night that we are back with Fluffanutta we
are taken to a party with the Vigilant Lost and we are presented with a magical
item each. Each of these items can be
used only three times but each of these are special for each of us.
Day 90; 131 days left; mid-day ( Kythorn 28, 498AF)
We manage to make it back to our world and we are
immediately arrested and charged with the death of Derek, Jackfin, and Candy. Derek was the clerk that gave us
the job, Candy was the one that showed us to the table, Jackfin was the one
that directed us to the the inn. We are
also charged with the death of 1000 dwarves by stone blight which only comes
from this place. We are brought to the
precinct house and we are take to the precinct and quested by an elf named
Tiger. We all are questioned
We tell them that we were kidnapped by Lord Caralan
Ironwood. After we say this our
questioner leaves and the tower guards come in and speak with us. She slams the tip of our staff on the floor
and once she comes in the room and actives and anti lie field. She is Lilly of Taryn the High
Inspector. She tortures DuTamn and
proves that we are telling truth. She
believes our story and we are able to confirm that Lord Ironwood is the man
responsible for out troubles. She tells
us that Lord Ironwood died 500 years ago and he was responsible for the War Of Five Races. He was banished to the island
of Ilas Dur which is the island off the coast.
When they went to check on the island they found it destroyed and they
were all undead, but all the ruins appeared to be thousands of years old, not hundreds.
We are all cleared of charges and we are given given a
letter to give to our guild master named Shamwow. The letter explains our absence and we are
accepted into the guild for the Tul D'Neir Guild badge which is three vertical
white bars on a blue background (lieutenant), 6 rings on a black (cleared for
planar travel), a black box in another black box (clearance with town
guard). we can rent townhouse (100 gp
per month), an 8 room villa with stable (200gp per month), and earn 10 gp per day.
Day 95; 240; morning; (Flamerule 2, 498AF)
We decide to use our new status to get the villa
and set up a base of operations.
